Erickson’s four years at Idaho commenced the most successful string of football seasons in school history. He was 32-15 in that time; Idaho was 113-45 from ’82 through ’94 with the spread offense under head coaches Erickson, Keith Gilbertson, and Gregg Smith. The fewest wins for an Erickson team at Idaho came in his third season, when the Vandals were 6-5, but one of those victories for the Division I-AA program was significant. It came against Oregon State, coached by Joe Avezzano.

Idaho beat the Beavers 41-22, but it wasn’t just the result that made an impression on Oregon State athletic director Dee Andros, it was the manner in which it was achieved. As old school as they come, Andros was an Oklahoma Marine who fought for a month in Iwo Jima, lived to tell about it, and came back to play for Bud Wilkinson’s legendary postwar Oklahoma Sooners. Andros knew what commitment looked like on a football team, knew about accountability and respect for teammates as well as any coach in the country.

As a head coach at Idaho, then later at Oregon State, Andros was a bare-knuckled running-game coach whose teams were led by fullbacks and middle linebackers. They considered it a great day if they could beat you 3-0 in the mud, which they did one day in Corvallis to a No. 1 usc team that featured O. J. Simpson.

But that day years later in Idaho as Oregon State athletic director, Andros saw the future of college football.
